How to fix a Nik Software plug-in crash in Snow Leopard
NIK Silver Efex has been crashing my CS3 ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. I've tried reinstalling everything, downloading a new copy of Silver Efex, removing duplicate fonts, creating a new login user on my Mac (both suggestions from NIK Support), and now I've tried your recommendation. But, NIK still crashes CS3. If I remove NIK completely (something NIK's "Uninstall" feature somehow neglects to do), CS3 runs great.
Is this problem common with NIK and Snow Leopard? They don't seem to want to get back to me on this anymore.

Safari for iPhone ignores viewport settings on .mobi domains
@Ronan Cremin: thanks for confirming this.
The reason why I mentionned the viewport meta tag, is that whatever the settings were (size, scaling, etc.) Safari for iPhone had its own rendering interpretation when the page was requested from the .mobi TLD. The rendering was different when requested from the .com TLD (or the IP address) - namely, the viewport settings were honored.
Thanks again for your comments.

Safari for iPhone ignores viewport settings on .mobi domains
David,
I have to admit that on first reading this I thought there was no way that it could be true.
So we tried testing it here at dotMobi and can confirm that your experience is repeatable—we tried the same page with a .mobi address, a .com address and a local intranet address (no top level domain suffix) on a 3GS.
That said, the effect doesn't appear to have anything to do with the viewport tag—we experienced the same effect without it. It's difficult to guess what Apple is at here, and why they choose to render the page slightly differently based on the TLD. On the plus side it does suggest that they are trying to optimize the rendering of the page if they believe it's mobile-friendly, which sounds like a good thing.
Interesting sleuthing, thanks for sharing.

Wow, that's really weird, but incredibly handy to know - especially like you say - not being an obvious thing to debug or understand. I wonder what made them implement it like that?

.Mac calendar synchronisation problem in Leopard
I had this same problem with Contacts [only].
Stephanie's post in #3 above worked for me also. I had tried a number of steps in the Apple forums.
My mistake, I believe, is in my reluctance to replace the MobileMe data in the cloud with the data that was on my Mac Mini [Snow Leopard] (my "sync/push server"). The Mac Pro (Leopard) silently stopped synching Contacts with the rest of my stuff - iPhone, Mac Mini, Macbook Pro.
Using Stephanie's one minute suggestion I have resolved the problem. Had that not worked then I'd have had to run through the full solution in this blog.
Thanks very much all. It has saved me days of grief :-)

Watch that trailing slash
I am lost, I noticed google webmaster tools has me indexed with the trailing slash half of the time and because I am using wordpress on a windows server I am having a hard time fixing the issue. So I am trying to figure out if I should (for SEO purposes) use the slash even though none of my backlinks point that way.
Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I ♥ my {international} Kindle
@Mary: the only way to activate your Kindle (International version) if you are out of the US is to use Audible's File Manager software.
The caveat is that it runs only on Windows, so if you are using a Mac, you'll need to run it under Parallels or VMWare.
The problem is that web browsing is deactivated (restricted) out of the US, so that the Kindle can't reach Audible's servers for activation.

@Doug I believe the only one that could be compatible with a car mount woud be the FastMac. But then it would depend on the form factor of the car mount.

iPhone battery packs: Mophie Juice Pack Air vs FastMac iV
Hi,
I have an iPhone 3GS and am considering buying an external battery pack for it. From what I've read above it appears that the Mophie Juice Pack Air is about 2 ounces, while the Mophie Juice Pack is about 3 ounces, and the FastMac IV is about 4 ounces. I don't own any of these prodcts, yet, but don't feel that the weight factor is significant for me. I wish Apple built the iPhone with a faster CPU and more RAM and the ability to handle media on the Adobe Flash Player, thus justifying the need for more "horsepower under the hood."
I am concerned about safety of my 32GB device and compatibility of any of these three batteries with a car mount.

My 2 cents worth of iPhone tips for Switzerland
Just thought you'd like to know in case you want to revisit and review:
Recent Versions, Press Releases MobileSyncBrowser 3.0 is the latest and most advanced version of the iPhone backup utility. Reviews for MobileSyncBrowser have been consistently positive, and when a user encounters a glitch, MSB's developer, Vaughn S. Cordero, avails himself by phone or email to help the customer step by step. Who uses MSB? Setting aside the argument that it is better to have a backup and not need it, than to need it and not have it, the original MSB users ranged from business executives who need to keep track of and produce hard-copy evidence of their communications, to the iPhone owner whose device was stolen or broken, to concerned parents wanting to keep track of their children's online contacts and friendships, and there's a commercial version being developed for grand-scale use regarding levels of information gathering, geared towards people who need MSB for legal proceedings or investigations. MobileSyncBrowser 3.0, available adds compatibility with iPhone OS 3.0 and was completely rewritten to provide better performance and enhanced stability. Technical Contact: Vaughn S.Cordero, email audiobinder at mac dot com
MobileSyncBrowser 3.1b1 This upgraded version of the application is available as pre-release software and has been said to be "better, faster, and more stable". It appeared barely five weeks after the release of MobileSyncBrowser 3.0. This latest edition of MSB, provides a multi-threaded experience, and is noticeable more stable and faster than the previous generations. MSB 3.1b1, marks a second milestone, leveraging the modularity to add background processing and caching so there's no waiting involved due to the extended scanning required for MSB Plus features. 3.1b1 also presents a cache file to the device backups which speeds subsequent visits to an unchanged backup; it alsoincludes fixes for cosmetic reasons and functional purposes. These include an improved handling of similar and alphanumeric addresses in the SMS Convo Lists; improved navigation on systems with 9+ backups where portions of the Categories list would scroll up out of view making them seem "unavailable"; the user should know that single click, double click and alt-click actions have different responses and a little experimentation is required. MobileSyncBrowser (MSB) 3.1b1 has been tested for iPhone OS 3.1b2 and iTunes 8.2.1 compatibility. An important thing to remember is that, as a prerelease software, 3.1b1 could behave in surprising ways; users are encouraged to take sensible precautions before and while operating. The developer assumes no responsibility whatsoever for the use of prerelease software, so prospective clients should try out MSB before purchase in order to familiarize themselves with its interface, and ensure the application works for them. MSB 3.1b1 is stable and recommended for developers and general users who have specific issues with the current MSB. Feedback is always appreciated. Important note: 3.1 beta releases (e.g. 3.1b1) users should bear in mind that, as pre-release test copies, they are limited to running for a maximum of 15 days, when the next test cycle begins. If a user prefers the 3.1 versions, they should download release 3.1b2 currently on the beta page for MSB at http://mobilesyncbrowser.com/beta or download the current 3.0.11 release which does not have this testing limit.

My 2 cents worth of iPhone tips for Switzerland
From the Public Relations Office of MobileSyncBrowser: As your website is in touch with the news about iPhone Technology and Applications, I'm writing to tell you about the release of MobileSync Browser (MSB) 3.0, as well as MSB 3.1b1, the exclusive pre-release version of this application.
MobileSyncBrowser is used to retrieve data automatically stored inside iTunes every time the iPhone was synchronized to the computer. MSB will recover all information, notes, contacts, call history and SMS messages, in case the device gets lost, broken or stolen. Visit MSB at: http://homepage.mac.com/vaughn/msync/
Users all over the world contact developer Vaughn S. Cordero to thank him and praise MSB for helping them evade the negative effects of losing all their information.
I'm attaching the press release and/or an informational document that outlines all the useful characteristics of MSB, now in its third generation. You are welcome to download the free trial; and please, would you kindly write a review or use the attached information to let your readers know about MobileSyncBrowser?
In addition to English, MSB includes Spanish, French and German support when it runs on systems in those languages. Be aware that MSB will work for iPhones in any language; however, the application contains those four to display the menus and the text. For instance, if you use MSB for an Italian iPhone, the information will display in Italian because MSB does not include that language support.
If you have questions or comments, please write back directly to Vaughn at audiobinder@mac.com, or reply to my email. Thank you for your help. -- Madeleine D. Quilichini, e: mad_copy@yahoo.com

iPhone v3.0 OS MMS and tethering
@chrisb63: yes, Swisscom has published the following:
Use your iPhone 3G as a modem.
Thanks to tethering, you will also be able to use your iPhone 3G as a modem for your notebook from 3 July 2009. Billing for data transmission will be based on the inclusive data volume of your surf subscription.
For frequent users, an additional data option with unlimited data volume**** (use in Switzerland) will be offered for CHF 59.- per month from the beginning of August 2009.
As of 3 July, you will be able to configure your iPhone 3G for tethering via iTunes free of charge.
**** In order to maintain service quality for all customers, Swisscom will reduce transfer speed if a customer exceeds 10GB in one month or will take other appropriate action. If there are signs of such activity, Swisscom reserves the right to exclude the subscription from normal private usage. Roaming charges are incurred for use abroad.

An evening with Violeta
Finally I managed to find some Mario Benedetti translations to English. I believe poems are impossible to translate, they only could be rewritten sometimes. But you can have a taste below.
M. Benedetti was exiled from Uruguay for many years since he was a strong critic of military dictatorship and of the influence of US on Latin America. What I loved about him is that he stayed being optimistic until the end of his life.
So, another poem, now in English.
Don´t Save Yourself
Mario Benedetti
Don't Save yourself,
Don´t be immobile
On the edge of the road,
Don't freeze the joy,
Don't love with reluctance,
Don't save yourself now
or ever,
Don't save yourself,
Don't fill with calm,
Don't reserve of the world
Just a calm place,
Don't let fall your lids
Heavy as trials,
Don´t speak without lips,
Don't fall asleep without sleepiness,
Don't think of you without blood,
Don't judge yourself without time.
But if in spite of everything
You cannot avoid it
And you freeze the joy,
And you love with reluctance,
And you save yourself now,
And you full with calm,
And you reserve of the world
Just a calm place,
And you let fall your lids
Heavy as trials,
And you speak without lips,
And you fall asleep without sleepiness,
And you think yourself without blood,
And you judge yourself without time,
And you are immobile
On the edge of the road,
And you save yourself,
Then
Don't stay with me.

David, I found this today (tomorrow for you since I am 5 hours after you).
I would never ever be able to translate this to English nor to French, nor to any other language, but I just hope you can follow these words in Spanish. But definitely it is a turning point... It is like a bottle in an ocean..
Title: In defense of happiness
Mario Benedetti
Defender la alegría como una trinchera
defenderla del escándalo y la rutina
de la miseria y los miserables
de las ausencias transitorias
y las definitivas
defender la alegría como un principio
defenderla del pasmo y las pesadillas
de los neutrales y de los neutrones
de las dulces infamias
y los graves diagnósticos
defender la alegría como una bandera
defenderla del rayo y la melancolía
de los ingenuos y de los canallas
de la retórica y los paros cardiacos
de las endemias y las academias
defender la alegría como un destino
defenderla del fuego y de los bomberos
de los suicidas y los homicidas
de las vacaciones y del agobio
de la obligación de estar alegres
defender la alegría como una certeza
defenderla del óxido y de la roña
de la famosa pátina del tiempo
del relente y del oportunismo
de los proxenetas de la risa
defender la alegría como un derecho
defenderla de dios y del invierno
de las mayúsculas y de la muerte
de los apellidos y las lástimas
del azar
y también de la alegría

EL SUR TAMBIEN EXISTE
Mario Benedetti
Con su ritual de acero
sus grandes chimeneas
sus sabios clandestinos
su canto de sirenas
sus cielos de neón
sus ventanas navideñas
su culto a dios padre
y de las charreteras
con sus llaves del reino
el norte es el que ordena
pero aquí abajo abajo
el hambre disponible
recorre el fruto amargo
de lo que otros deciden
mientras que el tiempo pasa
y pasan los desfiles
y se hacen otras cosas
que el norte no prohíbe
con su esperanza dura
el sur también existe
con sus predicadores
sus gases que envenenan
su escuela de chicago
sus dueños de la tierra
con sus trapos de lujo
y su pobre osamenta
sus defensas gastadas
sus gastos de defensa
son su gesta invasora
el norte es el que ordena
pero aquí abajo abajo
cada uno en su escondite
hay hombres y mujeres
que saben a qué asirse
aprovechando el sol
y también los eclipses
apartando lo inútil
y usando lo que sirve
con su fe veterana
el sur también existe
con su corno francés
y su academia sueca
su salsa americana
y sus llaves inglesas
con todos sus misiles
y sus enciclopedias
su guerra de galaxias
y su saña opulenta
con todos sus laureles
el norte es el que ordena
pero aquí abajo abajo
cerca de las raíces
es donde la memoria
ningún recuerdo omite
y hay quienes se desmueren
y hay quienes se desviven
y así entre todos logran
lo que era un imposible
que todo el mundo sepa
que el sur también existe.

Mobile Aperture
My strategy is to not be mad after Joe Schorr and the Aperture team for taking so long to release something that actually works for other than the independant wedding photographer. Then, go with the flow and consider — unless you're an embedded photog reporting from Kabul — that you're better off using your eyes and lenses while on the road instead of spending time pushing pixels on a screen.
My library lives in my studio and is very happy there. Abroad, I carry a Hyperdrive to backup my cards and that's about it. If I'm on assignment and need to shoot tethered, I create a specific Aperture project then copy it back to my main library when back in the studio (drag and drop works well for this).
Traveling with your entire photo library is like carrying around your entire music library, will you listen to it all?
My 2 cents...

Use Apache's mod_rewrite for beautiful MovableType URLs
@enrique: thanks!!
You are right to point this out. I left it out of the above tutorial beacuse none of its URLs appear in the address bar.
I believe you could symlink a`mt-static` folder into your blog's folder, and it should work just fine.
The configuration takes relative paths too (you don't have to specify a full URL):
StaticWebPath /mt-static/
So creating a symlink like,
ln -s /somewhere/on/your/disk/mt-static/ /your/blog/mt-static/
should do the trick.
WRT StyleCatcher, I'm not sure about it's default behaviour. I'll give it a look.

Use Apache's mod_rewrite for beautiful MovableType URLs
Thanks for the tutorial David, it helped me a lot.
However, how do you deal with the mt-static folder. Now that it is symlinked in the cgi-bin folder, It seems like I can't point to it from my new domain (I'm using MT's StyleCatcher which creates a @import in my CSS to a style inside mt-static.).
Using your technique, should one have a separate mt-static folder per domain/blog? Or could one simply create a symlink of the mt-static folder somewhere out of the cgi-bin folder? Not sure if I'm very clear...
Thanks again! // e

Use Apache's mod_rewrite for beautiful MovableType URLs
Thanks for the tutorial. Is there any easy-to-understand tutorial on symlink that might make this a little more accessible to those of us who are petrified of the command line?
I've done clean tag-search URLs through .htaccess before, but with my current installation structure (domain1.com and domain2.com using an MT installation in user.host.com), the old rewrite rules don't seem to work. This looks to be a solution, but I'm not familiar with symlink.

I have Greg's same exact problem. The good data is on mobileme and my iphone, with healthy syncing between the two. But my iCal in OS X 10.5.5 is way out of date and I'd just like to replace it with what's on mobileme. Yet I get the "inconsistent data" message when I try to reset data from mobileme. Annoying.

Use Apache's mod_rewrite for beautiful MovableType URLs
Great tutorial. I've got the same issue, a separate domain for a single MT install driving multiple blogs.
I want to your technique for one of the blogs I've got running, but don't want to break the others.
Say I've got Movable Type installed at:
publishing different blogs to different domains (all on the same server):
http://domain1.com/
http://domain2.com/
http://domain3.com/
If I create a symlink between...
mt.example.com/cgi-bin and domain1.com/cgi-bin
...what happens with the other domains that are referencing mt.example.com/cgi-bin? Will they still work as usual with the ugly urls or will they break?
Thanks.

.Mac calendar synchronisation problem in Leopard
@David: I've updated the MobileMe System prefs several times ... I'm running 10.5.5. I've completely erased my iSync device list, as I no longer need to sync my trusty SE600i via Bluetooth (which was a painless and reliable process >_
Taking a superficial look at the solutions, my safest bet would be to copy --by hand-- my calendars and contact details from the phone to the iMac; as the trend in the posted solutions is to "sync from scratch" online from the "definitive" copy on the computer.
I'm also tempted to leave things as they are for the moment, as the iPhone/MobileMe relationship is so healthy. Not happy that my iMac can't join in as a third party!
Also, I may have to reinstall OSX --again-- as I've just finished trouble-shooting some nasty wireless networking problems. This may give me a clean slate once I re-establish my, my wife's files/account status etc.

@Greg: strange. I have always had success in updating my Mac from the online (.Mac or MobileMe now) version, if the latter isn't corrupted. Which isn't the case if your iPhone and MobileMe account are syncing okay.
Have you updated the .Mac System Preference? It should read MobileMe now (Are you running Leopard? 10.5.x?)
There were some issues with 10.4 (Tiger) and MobileMe syncing - not sure if they are resolved now.

@Anila: I'm not sure. Does it not charge when connected directly to the USB port of a computer? Or via the power adapter?
Try swapping it with a recent iPod's power adapter, or try another cable to make sure the problem doesn't come from the accessories rather than from the phone itself.

@Jose I agree. Actually, with all the problems the iPhone 3G is plagued with, it's a better alternative. Both in terms of battery life and overall stability.
If you are happy with your current cellphone, and don't have sync issues, stick with it and buy an iPod Touch.
(who's price might significatively drop this month if you believe the rumours).
Not to mention, the iPhone probably is the worse cameraphone I have ever seen.

@djeni the idea is to remove the file named "com.micromat.Syphone.plist" from your ~/Library/Preferences folder before launching the application.
Yes MSB does ask for a donation before letting you backup anything. But it's worth it. Just give him what you think the application deserves. It's a great little application, stable and does just the job. It exports the data in a tab separated format for reuse in a spreadsheet or by any other programme.
Check out also Ecamm's MegaPhone which lets you access your iPod Touch/iPhone directly. You can also use it to export SMSs, call log etc. I find it ideal to transfer the images I received by MMS from my iPhone to my Mac. Brilliant.

10.5.2 freezes
I have been experiencing the sudden freeze up of Leopard ever since upgrading to 10.5.2 back in February. After reviewing the kernel crisis log with a fella at the Apple genius bar at our local store, I was told my MacBook Pro probably has a problem with the ram. I installed new ram and still have the same symptoms, e.g. random freeze ups that occur sometimes when I'm first bootin up, other times after several hours of use.
I wonder if Apple really knows there is a problem with Leopard vis-a-vis MacBook Pro freez ups and Leopard 10.5.2. Can anyone confirm a documented conversation with Apple's technical staff on this issue?
If not, can someone advise as to how to go about getting in touch with the Apple technical people?

.Mac calendar synchronisation problem in Leopard
I was just running into the same problem but after reading this post I was able to fix it in 1 minute.
I simply re-created the calendar data from my main machine (which holds the most up to date calendars) overwriting the old calendar data on .Mac. I just used the regular advanced feature for that. Afterwards I was able to sync the re-written calender data onto my MacBook PRO.
While this may not work for everybody it is a fast thing to try before you hit the command line purging this manually.
Hope this may be helpful for some

10.5.2 freezes
As this issue is growing, an interesting fix was posted on Apple Discussions which you might want to try if you are running into this problem:
Steve Eugene posted the following:
This is a HARDWARE problem!
After playing around with removing the battery and noticing that this often returned functionality to the keyboard I surmised that this had some sort of physical aspect.
Sure enough, there is a section of copper colored tape/wiring exposed in the batter slot that is slightly bowed where it's smallest.
When I depressed this with my finger tip on this portion to basically flatten it out flush against the housing; I found that all functionality was restored!
As amazing as it sounds, it has actually worked for a number of readers who were suffering from this issue.

Hi there D,

I mean, my MBP is freezing at least once per day, my Garageband is unusable, Safari chrashes so often that I'm switching to Firefox again ....WTF.
And one can only dream of the times when I had like 50-100 _working_ days of uptime on my PB G4.

Thanks for the tips, but in my case it didn't help :(

Mar 1 10:59:24 Macintosh loginwindow[2511]: DEAD_PROCESS: 0 console
The time difference between those two stamps is how long it hangs on the blue screen before going to the login screen.
Login is very snappy, but logout takes forever (3.5 minutes sometimes) As with Anand's comment if I turn off Airport before logging out it is a few seconds before getting the login screen.

10.5.2 freezes
Same here. Freezes started happening after the graphic update. Random but seem to be triggered by Safari + running on battery. I repaired permissions and freezes stopped for 3 days but then again it froze the last night :(
I feel exactly as you said -- it's sad to lose trust in a reliable tool (MacBook Pro).
I hope for a fix from Apple...

10.5.2 freezes
Sadly, the freezes are still occuring. They usually happen when I'm running on battery power, whatever the application running.
If Apple doesn't come out with a solution quickly, my only choice will be to clean install 10.5.1 and wait.
It really makes me feel angry.
On the gripe level, please be aware that the SiliconImage ExpressCard 34 eSATA host controller generates kernel panics under Leopard when inserted or ejected from my MacBook Pro. The current driver is v1.1.9 and this includes cards sold by Sonnet and LaCie. Sucks.

Will step off from the "baaaaaaah" on the MN website (fancy but too sheepy =P) and want to drop down few words from a song that fill your ending lines:
Release your innovations
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you

Try this recompiled version of GrowlMail: http://www.mediafire.com/?29l7bt4xe7c
You'll need to set to true the EnableBundles property of your Mail preferences (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist)
Please note that this is not an official version, and hence not supported, so don't bother the developers. Nevertheless, it seems to do the job. You can't select/deselect the accounts to monitor in the Preference pane. All accounts are active be default.
Treat this as an interim solution until the official version becomes available (it is being completely rewritten to account for changes in Leopard). I'm currently running it with Growl 1.1.2 on Mac OS 10.5.2.

David,
Thanks for posting this article on how your use SoftRaid and Super Duper. (I found you after plugging in several combinations of keywords into Google - whew!) My mercury elite plug-n-play that comes with SoftRaid should be coming soon as I'll be using that to back-up everything from my computer hard drive and any external drives off the computer. I had heard I can use Super Duper to schedule but still have to figure it out exactly how to do that. Looks like a lot of user manual reading is in the near future (grin). I'm used to having a help desk and recently became my own tech support - oy. Thanks for the other tips and letting me know it can be done ;-)

iPod Touch first impressions
I live in France and work in Geneva.
While I was in Knoxville TN Apple Store, I bought two Ipod Touch players, and a MacBook (The MacBook is fine except I have to cough up 200Eu to buy Lepoard a week after I bought it). I was going to give the Itouch players as presents for Christmas to my daughter and wife.
However I have found out to my cost that the devices have been sabotaged in such a way that only ITunes can be used on only one computer for one device. Also the players are unusable from Linux (Encrypted
protocol) so that it is impossible to use them with winamp + mlipod as in the past. In my opinion I was sold these devices under false pretenses, they are simply junk, there should be a large warning written on the packet:
WARNING THESE DEVICES ARE BRAIN DEAD AND NEED ITUNES BLOATWARE.
My daughter runs Ubuntu/Windows Dual Boot, I run Ubuntu,
MaxOs (on my new MacBook) and Windows. There are 6 computers in my house, 3 operating systems and two ITouches; the horrible impossible mess created by Itunes
and the ridiculous way it is impossible to use windows and MacOs (Incompatible file systems!!) or even two windows computers (One Library) is simply a dirty trick from Apple. Rest assured that I will tell others what Apple is up to, they wont sell any more of that junk to the people I know. The web is now full of complaints about IPhone and ITouch:
http://www.blogitouch.fr/2007/09/17/itunes-obligatoire-pour-les-nouveaux-ipod/
- this explains how the Itouch has been sabotaged and how to fix it with a jailbreak
or
http://www.calacanis.com/
- are some examples of the troubles the poor suckers had who own two computers, hell they don't have two ITouches
then they would be in real trouble.
Apple is shooting itself in the foot.
Any one want a couple of new ITouches going cheap I am not dishonest enough not tell tell them what a load of rubbish they are.

@Elo: Mac OS X 10.5's Mail.app requires bundle version 3 or greater. You can try the following command to enable GrowlMail:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail EnableBundles -bool YES defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion -int 3
Or, download the script from http://trac.growl.info/changeset/4693

Backup revisited
@Adriano: did you quite all running apps? If so, you probably have a service accessing the drive (filesharing most probably).
Here are the steps I follow on my Mac OS X Server:
1. Open server Admin;
2. Stop file sharing services (AFP, Windows);
3. Open SoftRAID;
4. Split MIrror Volume Backup into “Read-only Secondary Disk?. Two disks with the same name will appear in the Finder. One has a padlock, that is the secondary drive;
5. Unmount the padlocked volume and remove physically the disk from the system;
6. Insert the other secondary disk. It will appear as locked volume in SoftRAID;
8. Click it and select "Convert Read-only Secondary Drive" from the Volume menu;
9. A dialog box will ask you what to do with it. Select “Add to original mirror?. The secondary disk will then synched;
10. Restart file sharing services and resume normal life.
If you're not running Mac OS Server, turn the file sharing services off from the System Preferences > Sharing pane.

You can use iTunes to verify that all the music, videos, and other items you bought from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store are in your iTunes library. You might want to do this if a download was interrupted. Here's how:
1. In iTunes, choose Store > Check for Purchases.
2. Enter your iTunes Store account ID and password, then click Check.
3. Purchases not yet on your computer will be downloaded.

Use Apache's mod_rewrite for beautiful MovableType URLs
This is close to what I have been looking for. The problem is that the keywords in your urls are separated by underscores, which almost defeat the purpose of rewriting the urls. I think most people rewrite their urls for search engines and the little extra boost they give.

Airport Disk hangs logout if not unmounted
EXCELLENT!! I have been looking for those wise words for a couple of weeks now.
Its ridiculously tedious searching for various mac issues on the web as well as apple's own "knowledge base". As a long time windows admin, now apple addict, this is the one place apple needs to look MS over the shoulder, and implement something similar on their website. The MS knowledge base and TechNet for pro's are far easier to search through and find useful info in.
Anyway, many thanks for posting your experience here.
Best regards,

I've just been having the same problem. My solution was to escape the UTF-8 characters in the CSS file; for example, rather than using

It doesn't cure the problem, but it works in all the browsers I've tested without needing to play around with MIME types or conditional rules.

Swiss french speak French
Symantec is doing involuntary Multilanguage interactions with its clients: Last year, I bought a French version of Norton antivirus in a Swiss store. Yesterday I was trying to renew the license. First I click yes on the Norton invite would you like to renew your license?. I was quite surprise to get a page in German which was invited me to update a German version of Norton antivirus. It was simply impossible to find a way to switch to a French page in order to update my French version of Norton... Anyway, after a short research on Symantec website, I finally found that in the French version of the site, the client may choose other French-speaking countries, i.e Switzerland, cool! I renewed the license there and was quite happy to receive a confirmation in a language that I guess was something like Finnish !!! Of course I paid the new license but the new code is systematically rejected when I try to enter it in Norton... :-(

Multiple iTunes librairies
Few and far apart. I only sync my calendar and contact info with my iPods.
This results from the fact that my truly mobile iPod is a 1Gb Nano I picked up at a slashed price just before the 2nd generation Nanos were released, and such little storage requires manual syncing. My other iPod is a 30Gb 3G that sits in the car, and only make his way back home before a long trip in the car.
iPod syncing has always been an issue with me as it relies on a single library to perform at its best. Mine gets hooked up to two desktop Macs and a MBP on a weekly basis, so I quickly disabled the music/playlist/podcast syncing. I don't maintain consistent libraries over all the computers I use. The only library I try to maintain up-to-date is my home Airport Disk shared one. I regularly drag my new tracks to it, but I haven't yet found n efficient way of doing so. I have a playlist on my MBP with the latest tracks I need to add, but you still need to export them somehow from one lib in order to import to another, which still is a drag. I'm working on an Automator script that will do it or me, but haven't got around to polishing it yet.
I would believe that using multiple libraries with an iPod is a bit like using an iPod on multiple computers, you have to switch to "Manually manage music" in the iPod's preference pane on iTunes.
So no, iPod syncing isn't a feature I use too much.
08 Apr 2007
by Enrique
Multiple iTunes librairies
It seems like my iPod auto-syncs with the currently loaded library which confuses me slightly. Also, the selected playlists settings seem to remain on the iTunes side and not the libraries' which is also quite bizarre.
What is your experience syncing an iPod with multiple libraries?

Safari UTF-8 rendering glitch fixed in WebKit nightly build
David, that's curious! I guess I misremembered the cause for this issue. The fact that @charset isn't working in Safari 2.0 is not surprising -- support for it was only added to WebKit in September last year. The issue I mentioned, which doesn't seem to be the case in the examples you've provided, was about the character set on the main document being ignored when determining the encoding of the stylesheet. If you're really curious and interested in finding a workaround, it should be possible to work out roughly where in the archive of nightly builds the bug went away. This would make it easier to work out what the fix for the problem was and can make it simple to work backwards from there to find a workaround.
David, thanks for testing the nightly builds! If you run into any other issues which are not yet fixed, please don't hesitate to file bug reports so that they can be investigated as soon as possible.

Safari UTF-8 rendering glitch fixed in WebKit nightly build
Thanks Mark for your insight and comments. I don't know why I didn't think to use the charset property or rule before.
In html file:
<link type="text/css; charset=utf-8" rel="stylesheet" href=".." />
In external stylesheet file:
@charset "utf-8";
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get it to work properly. I added a rule to set the charset information in .htaccess as described in the W3C document FAQ: Setting charset information in .htaccess. The new http headers can be viewed with through a web-sniffer report of a css file.
AddType 'text/css; charset=UTF-8' css
The css file shows up correctly: the quotes are curly. Unfortunately, the html page isn't rendered correctly.
I wrapped up a quick set of test files to illustrate the differences with and without the charset property in the main html file and the external stylesheet file, and was surprised to see that none of them work as they should.
- Embedded stylesheet: works fine
- External stylesheet without @charset rule referenced without the charset property in link
- External stylesheet with @charset rule referenced without the charset property in link
- External stylesheet without @charset rule referenced with the charset property in link
- External stylesheet with @charset rule referenced with the charset property in link
All files are utf-8 encoded. All files are rendered correctly in the latest nightly build, but not in Safari 2.

Safari UTF-8 rendering glitch fixed in WebKit nightly build
I should mention that the proper solution for the CSS generated content issue would be to serve your stylesheet with a MIME type that mentions the encoding of the content. Content-type: text/css; charset=utf-8 will have your curly-quotes looking splendid in Safari 2.0 as well as the nightly builds, and is safer than relying on the specific heuristic used to determine the encoding in a stylesheet.
15 Mar 2007
by Mark Rowe
Safari UTF-8 rendering glitch fixed in WebKit nightly build
From memory the issue here was that external stylesheets default to the latin-1 text encoding while users assume they would default to the encoding of the document referencing them. I do not recall what the specification says about this, but I believe WebKit was updated to respect any character set specified in the HTTP headers for the stylesheet (as it always has) and fall back to the main documents encoding if one is not set. That would explain why you are seeing the correct behaviour now where it failed in the past.
The JavaScript issue sounds a bit different and I can't think of a reason for the issue off the top of my head. Since it's fixed in WebKit and you have a workaround for your site, I'll leave that as is.
- Mark

What is your notepad bag?
For one reason, I can't stop using my Freitag bag that hasn't really been designed for laptops but is quite okay with a pouch like the Brain Cell.
Is it because of the "less bag" factor, or the feeling it gives to own a unique design (every Freitag bag is different) or is it the snobbishness to wear a brand that has entered the permanent collections of some museums of modern art, I don't know. Maybe it is simply because I like bags that don't look new.
Anyhow, my next "new" bag might be a Crumpler because of their simple, well-thought designs and their wild branding.

Johanna, I actually did embed the picture at first, then I noticed the copyright notice: © All Rights Reserved. - so I swapped it with Flickr's logo.

My backup paranoia
It is quiet actually. The PowerMac G5's fans make more noise and cover those of the Fusion. LaCie's Two Big is much more noisier (but it is off most of the time, and it's hidden in a closet anyway).

How noisy is the Fusion 400? Anything you could live with in your lounge?

Sorry about the signal strength bug you're seeing in this screenshot, the private AirPort API for newer Macs are sending back bad data and I've almost got a new release which fixes the bug ready to ship. Keep an eye out.

Thanks! Couldn't figure out why it worked on one Mac and not on the other.
PS: were you the guy who wrote on Macinblog a few years ago?
